In https://arxiv.org/pdf/2504.09148 (preprint, 2026), Ding et al. show that, as the SRG resolution is lowered, a spin → pseudospin transition occurs and the familiar “magic numbers” become visible as robust shell gaps; they also report an increasingly important role of 3N forces for spin–orbit splittings in the low-resolution regime. The numerical data behind all figures are provided as a reproducibility package on https://zenodo.org/records/17889826.
The FBA view translates the result not as “mystery solved,” but as an operational coarse-graining problem: Which scale map is admissible, which residuals remain, and which pass/fail checks separate genuine emergence from scheme/truncation artifacts?

- Standard/established: The preprint also identifies a clear scale effect: the influence of 3N forces on spin–orbit splittings increases toward smaller resolution; as an application, the evolution along isotope chains is discussed, among other topics.
- Hypothesis: “Explained” is magicity exactly if the chosen scale procedure (SRG/IMSRG, operator handling, truncation) can be read as an admissible coarse-graining of the relevant observables; otherwise, emergence can be mimicked by scheme/truncation residuals.
FBA view
- Handle: Treat “resolution” as a controlled dial and maintain an output register: shell-gap proxies (e.g., jumps in binding energies/excitation energies) and spin–orbit splittings as functions of the scale.

- FBA: The central gain is an auditable workflow: emergence is not asserted, but documented via reproducibility, plateau checks, and residuals as a scale “contract,” and can therefore be cleanly falsified.
